Day Zero

 Camping at Campo


We arrived in San Diego early this morning and shopped for supplies before driving to Campo, CA. We have inspected the monument and the border fence.


A shelter at the campsite provides a graffiti wall for hikers starting out.

Smoke

Arthur exited the trail due to smoke today. He said he was hiking in it for three days and starting to feel worn out mentally and physically. Luckily he got a ride to Sisters, OR, and is staying in a hotel tonight. We discovered a Facebook group that coordinates rides and other support for PCT hikers in central Oregon. In the morning he is getting a ride to Trail Days in Cascade Locks, less than 200 miles north. He'll meet up with some friends from his time in the desert, recover from smoke and long days of big miles, and if conditions improve, he can get a ride back to the trail in Oregon.

Day 15

Arthur is taking a zero day in Big Bear City. This morning he ate a huge burrito for breakfast but was still hungry and planned to buy many snacks at the grocery store. He plans to take a shower and wash his clothes at the home of a trail angel where he'll stay with other hikers.  He sent me lots of photos, which I'll post and caption as I have time. Meanwhile, here's a selfie from Mile 265, one-tenth of the way!
