Lassen and Shasta

Arthur just passed through Lassen Volcanic National Park and has had views of Mt Lassen and Mt Shasta for the last several days. He continues to message me nearly every day. 

Tuesday July 18:
"Got a nice campsite near a waterfall! Big drop down into belden earlier today, saw a monarch and tons of hummingbird moths. Rested at belden resort for a while, then began the climb. Extremely hot and exposed at the start, but there were delicious wild blackberries along the way. Climbed up into this pretty canyon with shade, but intermittent burn scar from the Dixie Fire I think made some of it pretty sunny and hot."

Wed July 19:
"Lots of burn area today. Better views of Lassen and now can see Shasta! Amazing trail magic at a gravel road, got watermelon and cherries. Saw a banana slug!"

Thursday July 20:
"Lots more burn area today, pretty annoying. Camping right at the border of lassen NP, five others here. Pretty views of lassen for most of the day"

Friday July 21:
"Did 31 miles today
Hoping to do 29 tomorrow and then go into Burney the next day but might do 23 as there's a campsite option there as well."

 As some of you already know, Arthur is home in St. Louis. Several days after he got back on the trail near Lake Tahoe, he found that hiking wasn't fun anymore. So we helped him get to Reno and on a plane to STL.  I'll let Arthur share whatever other thoughts he would like. And hopefully he'll share a bunch of photos, too.

Changing plans

 Arthur got off the trail Wednesday and the next day got a ride to Trail Days, a festival with music, events, food, raffles, all to celebrate the PCT. He had a great time and reunited with some friends, and anticipated hiking north into Washington with them to continue their hike and leave the smoke of Oregon behind. But then the smoke descended on Washington. Now it seems that most of Oregon and Washington are socked in with smoke and terrible air quality indexes. So now Arthur is going to make his way back south to the Sierra, where the snow has melted and the river crossing have calmed down, making conditions ideal for a through hike.  He's getting a ride to Portland where he will spend a couple nights with our good friend's sister and her family, and then he'll get a train to Sacramento. From there he will transfer to Truckee and spend a few days at Donner Summit -- from where he started north at the beginning of July -- gathering supplies, and then start heading south.

Saturday, Aug 12: "Did 33 miles today, smoke not bad. Got incredible trail magic (watermelon, burger and ice cream!). Mosquitoes this evening are a waking nightmare they're awful" "Mount Thielsen, also called 'the lightning rod of the cascades'"
